Machined and cast parts

Inspection of machined and cast parts in China

MSC inspects machined, cast and forged parts at your supplier's factory anywhere in mainland China. Our inspectors measure the critical dimensions on your drawing, check threads with go and no-go gauges, run the functional and destructive tests in your protocol, verify material certificates, and send a photo report in English within 24 hours. $240 per inspector-day, all inclusive.

What we check

CheckHow
Critical dimensionsMeasured with digital calipers, an outside micrometer, a depth caliper, an angle rule and feeler gauges against the tolerances on your drawing, on the sample size set in the protocol. Each value is recorded as a min to max range.
ThreadsGo and no-go checks with thread plug and ring gauges from M4 to M10. Other sizes with gauges you supply, or a functional check with a reference screw.
Coating thicknessZinc plating and other coatings on steel measured with a coating thickness gauge, several readings per sample.
AppearanceBurrs on edges and threads, scratches, dents, porosity on castings, surface treatment defects, checked on an AQL sample to ISO 2859-1.
Functional and destructive testsTorque tests with torque screwdrivers, torque wrenches and a digital torque meter; insertion, extraction and push-out forces with push-pull gauges up to 500 N; drop tests from a set height, as written in the protocol.
Material and test documentsMaterial certificates and test reports checked against the order, with heat or batch numbers traced to the parts. Spot tests for stainless steel grade and lead content when the protocol asks for them.
Quantity, packing and labelsQuantity against the order, packing levels, labels and marking, pallet wrapping and ISPM 15 marking.

Instruments are calibrated, or checked against reference standards, on a yearly schedule. If your drawing calls for surface roughness, metal hardness or 3D measurement, tell us when you request a quote: we confirm the means available before the inspection is booked.

Common defects on machined and cast parts

  • Dimensions drifting out of tolerance during a run as tools wear.
  • Burrs left on edges, holes and threads.
  • Damaged or incomplete threads.
  • Porosity and shrinkage on cast parts.
  • Wrong material, or a certificate that does not match the batch.
  • Uneven plating or coating.
  • Parts from a similar reference mixed into the lot.

Sampling

Visual checks usually follow ISO 2859-1 at general inspection level II. Dimensional, functional and destructive tests use their own, smaller samples, set in the protocol. How to read an AQL table.

How an inspection runs

  1. You send the drawing, the order details and your inspection protocol. Without a protocol, we use our standard checklist or draft one from your drawing for your approval.
  2. We reply within one business day with the number of inspector-days and the date.
  3. The inspector checks the goods at the supplier's factory and records quantities, measured values and photos line by line.
  4. You receive the report in English within 24 hours. The release decision stays with your quality manager.
  5. If the lot fails, the parts can come to our Ningbo workshop for 100% inspection and sorting.

Price

$240 per inspector-day, all inclusive anywhere in mainland China, with no travel fees and no weekend surcharge. 100% inspection and sorting is quoted per unit or per lot. How inspection pricing works.
